Robert McGinley
Robert McGinley is a photographic artist dedicated to documenting natural habitats threatened by development to inspire conservation. With a B.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, he began as a filmmaker, winning awards for his feature film Jimmy Zip. His passion for land protection led him to environmental landscape photography, focusing on preserving vulnerable ecosystems.
In 2001, McGinley assumed management of his family’s 400-acre farm in Barrington, Illinois, and successfully lobbied for its protection through a conservation easement, creating the largest permanent land preservation easement in Illinois. His photography played a pivotal role in this effort, raising awareness among officials and the public.
McGinley continues to capture the farm’s evolving beauty at dawn and dusk, using his art to advocate for natural resource preservation. An active member of organizations like the Trust for Public Land and Heal the Bay, he splits his time between studios in Santa Monica, California, and Barrington, Illinois.
